NOTTINGHAM – Researchers at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) have developed shoe laces which integrate light emitting diodes (LEDs) which they feel could be leveraged to improve the safety of joggers and cyclists exercising after dark.  

The laces have been created by a team at NTU’s Advanced Textiles Research Group (ATRG) alongside engineering firm QinetiQ and are powered by a battery embedded within the shoe’s sole.  

“The current laces have real potential to make a great difference to the healthcare, athletic, leisure, defence and security industries. The potential future integration of other technologies onto the lace itself really opens up a world of possibilities for large impact,” said QinetiQ materials scientist, Roya Ashayer-Soltani.
