MĀNOA – A study conducted by researchers from the University of Hawaii has discovered that fabrics laundered with freshwater are more effectively and thoroughly cleaned due to a process of diffusiophoresis – where water has a higher concentration gradient that prises deep routed dirt particles from within textiles.

Microscopic fluorescent polystyrene beads were placed in a soapy solution to mimic dirt particles in this research, which found that an unequal distribution of ions produces an electric field that drives the motion of dirt away from the textile for easy removal.
