BONN – Researchers from the Universities of Bonn and Aachen in Germany have teamed up with native textile manufacturer Heimbach to develop a substrate capable of adsorbing oils but repelling water.

The material innovation is based on the innate characteristics of the Salvinia floating fern, which is superhydrophilic yet superoleophilic, which enables it to transport only oils even when fully submerged in water.
