DENKENDORF - Researchers at the German Institute for Textile and Fiber Research (DITF) have developed biodegradable yarn covers to protect tree saplings during reforestation projects.

The 'growth covers' prevent animals, such as deer, from feeding on the seedlings and help ensure they are not prevented from reaching maturity by other forest plants.

Scientists at the DITF wanted to develop biodegradable covers as previously used sheaths, made of plastic and metal, were often not removed in time and ended up polluting the environment.
