VANCOUVER – A research team from the University of British Columbia (UBC) hopes to develop a method of minimising wrinkling in the manufacture of composite materials, as they claim a single wrinkle can diminish the strength of a material by around 50 per cent.

The proposed method stretches a composite material simultaneously in two directions during the manufacturing process, using a custom-made biaxial fixture which clamps and removes unwanted bumps and folds.
