IRVINE – A research team at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), has developed a wearable and disposable respiration monitor with help from the children’s toy Shrinky Dinks which, when heated, reduce in size.

The US researchers applied thin metal sheets to Shrinky Dinks before heat was applied to cause corrugation of the material. Through embedded sensors which will feed back to an accompanying smartphone via Bluetooth, it’s been proven that the metal films can measure strain on the material when it’s planted on a patient’s rib cage.
