THESSALONIKI – Scientists in Greece have developed a new way to make silk fabrics oil and water repellent using silica-based nano-coatings that are free from per fluorinated compounds and applied without the use of volatile organic solvents. The scientists claim these new types of silica textile coatings produce superhydrophobic and superoleophobic properties, but do not impact on silk dyeing, and can be completely removed with either liquid or super-critical carbon dioxide treatments and are therefore reversible.
