CLERMONT-FERRAND – PET recycling innovator Carbios has doubled the number of patents it holds for its enzyme-based technology which breaks down plastic waste to the building blocks of virgin-grade materials.

Carbios now holds 336 titles worldwide, divided into 53 patent families, for its recycling of PET plastics and textile fibres, and for its PLA biodegradation technology.

New patents were granted last year in countries including the USA, Indonesia, South Korea, China, Japan and India to protect the company's proprietary PET-degrading enzymes. Carbios also obtained grants within its patent families to protect its biodegradable plastics production process.
