CHARLOTTESVILLE – Researchers at the University of Virginia, in collaboration with material scientists at Penn State, the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, have developed a switch-based system for the conductivity of smart textiles based on the presence of water.

The textile coating developed by the research team is based on an engineered biomaterial inspired by squid ring teeth. The composition of which can be programmed at the molecular level to offer unique properties including high strength, durability, biocompatibility and the ability to self-heal.
