ZURICH – A team at Swiss research institute EMPA has developed software said to accurately measure the heat retention of garments which it’s hoped can aid designers in creating purpose-built apparel for seasonal weather change.

The new system assesses the temperature of air layers between the wearer and the garment’s outer fabric to determine heat loss. This, used in tandem with existing measuring software, can create a representative picture of how body temperature fluctuates with different garment and fabric types.
