ZURICH – Researchers at the Swiss innovation institute EMPA have developed fire-resistant cotton fabrics that retain their conventional skin-friendly properties.

Typically, the manufacture of flame-retardant cotton requires a trade-off which causes the material to lose its ability to maintain a comfortable microclimate.

EMPA says it’s overcome this hurdle using novel phosphorus chemistry that could open up the door to industrywide applications if the cotton solution is substantially scaled.
