EMERYVILLE - US biotechnology company Bolt Threads has linked up with Dutch bio-based materials producer Mycelium Materials Europe (MME) to scale up production of its mushroom-based leather substitute.

It will enable Bolt Threads to scale up production of its Mylo material using the 'Dutch Shelf System' which has been adapted by MME to grow mushrooms on trays the length of a jumbo jet.

Bolt Threads is currently working with brands including Adidas, Lululemon and Stella McCartney to develop Mylo which is made from mycelium, the root-like structure of funghi.
